Udupi: The Udupi district Beedi Workers Federation staged a protest at the main branch of Bharath Beedi Works on January 27, Monday demanding scheduled work timing for the beedi workers and offering a fixed salary.

Forwarding the memorandum to the owner of Bharath Beedi Works, CITU Secretary Vishwanath Rai alleged that the Bharath Beedi Works consequently has cut down the wages of the labourers to deprive the employees from work.
Furthermore Rai demanded that the beedi workers should be offered full-scale salaries and must be entrusted with proper working hours rather than been made to work all day.
He said, “It is very difficult to lead a decent and healthy family life with the limited earnings that these workers earn.” He also alleged that the Company has been unfair towards the local labourers and said that if the company fails to ensure full time work to the permanent employees, it should provide compensation following the legal formalities. He also said that compensation should be paid for the loss incurred to the labourers till date.
Rai threatened that rigorous protests will be organised in the coming days if the company failed to take action within 15 days.
