Caste based census kick starts today in DK district

Mangaluru: From today to April 30th, expect a visit from a census surveyor, mostly a teacher, as the first of its kind, census based on caste, education and economic status kicks off today. off. Its been showcased as a landmark survey.

The census manual published by the government has listed a total of 1,503 castes, which includes 1,351 other castes, 101 scheduled castes sub-castes and around 50 scheduled tribes in the state. Enumerators should fill the census form which has 55 questions, that includes a column for caste, sub-caste and other names that the caste is known by.

Dakshina Kannada district has been classified into 930 blocks and each block will have specified number of enumerators and master trainers.

The census is being held across the state after 84 years, which make the census all the more significant.

This will be the first caste-based survey in the State since 1931 and will be conducted under the aegis of the Karnataka Backward Classes Commission.
