Puttur: Kambala season is here and amidst fun and frolic a freak accident took place at the Kambala venue in Puttur. When the speeding Kambala buffaloes reached the finish line, the pair ran over a curious little boy.

The Kambala was being held at the fields of Puttur Mahalingeshwara temple by Jaya Karnataka organisation under the leadership of Muthappa Rai. This is the 25th year of the Kambala.

As the crowd cheered and the raging buffaloes gave their best, on reaching the finish point, a little boy came under the feet of the buffaloes. Though he was trampled by the bovine, he miraculously stood up without even a minor bruise on his body.

Kambala is a rural sport of the coastal belt where buffaloes are made to run on mushy land by the jockeys. During the summer season, this competitive sport events are held at various places across the coastal belt. Though animal rights activists had equated the sport to violent Jallikattu of Tamil Nadu, Kambala has got the nod from the court, which has given guidelines within which the event can be held.

However, accident that took place in Puttur is clearly a lapse on the part of the organisers and not a mishap that was caused by the nature of the sport.
