Udupi : “The widening of the Agumbe Ghat Road is acceptable but demolishing the existing buildings  and the newly laid roads for the purpose, is unconvincingly outrageous,” said former Udupi MLA and BJP leader Raghupati Bhat.

“The Central government has  said that the  National Highway 169 A will  pass through Parkala, Hiryadka, Manipal, and Udupi city and touch National Highway 66 at Karavali Junction. It is an unscientific plan from Congress government and the existing MLA and MP should understand the situation rather than supporting it,” he added.

Explaining it further, he said that the new highway requires the widening of the existing roads by 40 metres on either side. Such a change would mean the destruction of nearly 3,000 commercial buildings, 600 houses  in turn affecting nearly  22,000 people, he added.

He also said that the NH 169A is a good proposal as  it will widen Agumbe Ghat Road  to facilitate trade between Shimoga and Udupi. The BJP strongly opposes the proposal as it is not properly planned, Bhat said and added that the party will hold a huge rally  and protest if the government does not consider its demand.

He suggested that the government should think of an option or alternative routes such as Koteshwar-Someshwar-Tirthahalli or else Brahmavar-Hebri-  Tirthahalli. which will also lead to the development of the villages.
