Moodbidri:It has come to light on October 10, Wednesday that an ancient lake existed in the past in the place where the Poabs Rock Mines company was presently operating a crusher  unit. The company is learnt to have closed the lake in order to facilitate  the crusher  plant at Murtulagudde in Kadandale village of Paladka Gram Panchayat limits.

The mining company which was operating since 20 years, was initially  running a crusher on a private plot of 1.95 acre in the area. Later, it had encroached acres of state-owned  land nearby to  dump mounds of jelly, baby jelly and jelly powder. The locals complained to the authorities when the trees in the state-owned land perished owing to air pollution and dumping of jelly powder. Acting upon the complaint, the Tahsildar, officers of forest, mining and geology departments and the Department of Agriculture, visited the spot recently.

The ruins of the ancient lake were unearthed when Assistant Agriculture Officer Nagaraj visited the location on Wednesday October 9.  The village elders said that there was a ancient lake in the vicinity and that it was covered to develop mining site.  The huge stock of jelly and jelly powder on several acres of state-owned land dried up the lake, they alleged.

Addressing the media persons on the spot, Swami Esha Vittaldas said that Poabs Rock Mines tried to cover up the origins of a lake by dumping several tons of jelly in the state-owned land.  The general public are deprived of water source by systematically covering the lake, said the seer.  He also urged the government officials to take action against the erring mining company.

If the company suspended operations in the encroached government lands on October 7. Monday, villagers  blocked the tippers and other vehicles that were transporting jelly stones from the crusher plant on October 8, Tuesday.
