Bantwal : KN Somashekhar, independent candidate from Dakshina Kannada Lok Sabha constituency  has alleged  that all MPs and MLAs were functioning like brokers and that they were resorting to  atrocities on environment in the name of development.

Speaking to reporters at BC Road on April 8, Tuesday, he said democracy can be meaningful when even the last person in the society has freedom in the real sense.

It is regretting to note that elections instead of being fought on issues were fought on  individual and community  basis, and added that  environment which has a bearing on the life of common man has no place in the manifesto of any party.

He said he was the only candidate  from DK constituency who is fighting the election as a candidate  of environment as a protest to the ‘anti-environmental’ stance of various political parties. He said his fight is not restricted merely to elections but will be continuous.

Somashekhar also launched a tirade against State Minister and DK District in-charge Minister Ramanatha Rai and alleged that Rai was busy in politics even when forests are being destroyed. He also blamed Rai for the foundation laying of Yettinahole project. He said the forest minister was also silent to the destruction of 50,000 trees in the 119 km long forest area in Madikeri for the 400kv hi-tension power lines under Rajeev Gandhi Electrification Project and suspected a hidden agenda behind this project aimed at round the clock power supply to two Girijan colonies at Kozhikode in Kerala from Mysore-Ilawala.

C Yatiraj of Tumkur Dharani Mandala and Nagesh Angirasa, noted environmentalist were also present.
