Bantwal : The heaps of waste at the garbage dumping yard  at Palike in Vittal Gram Panchayat limits accidentally caught fire on January 11, Saturday morning, bringing tense moments for residents of the locality.

The dumping yard was  set up about a year ago spending lakhs of rupees and all wastes generated in Vittal area are collected in the Panchayat vehicle and dumped at this place. It is learnt, the fire was first noticed at around 4 in the morning and  that the wastes dumped in a  pit for preparation of manure have been destroyed,

Locals said nearly four to five houses in the vicinity also faced danger  with  flames soaring high. The fire service personnel along with locals helped in putting out the fire.

Meanwhile, some residents of the area complained  that the entire area was stinking  and that though wastes are dumped here in order to recycle them into manure, no steps have been taken in that direction by the Panchayat.
