70 students take ill after mid-day meals

Mangalore: More than 70 students of Kinya Belaringe higher primary school near Mudipu fell sick on Friday, March 7, after consuming mid-day meal served to them in the school.

As the students started complainign of vomiting and giddiness, all of them were rushed to K.S. Hegde hospital, Deralakatte for the treatment. Around eight children were admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU) of the hospital for severe vomiting, they were later discharged in the evening after their recovery, however one child is still said to be critical.

Dr Ratnakar, taluk medical officer and district executive visited the hospital and said that children with severe vomiting have been given medicine.  Some have complained of stomach pain and all have been given tablets. Samples of rice and sambar cooked as meal have been sent to the laboratory.

Ohter medical officers and teachers rushed to the hospital and the students were kept in observation. The rice was taken from a new sack, said headmistress Rekha.

As the school is under Ullal police station limits, Ullal police visited the hospital.
