‘Water to be supplied every alternate day, available water sufficient for 12 days’

Mangaluru: Forest and ecology minister and district in-charge B Ramanath Rai has requested to public of the district to use water judiciously and also said that water will be supplied on alternate days from April 20. 
Speaking to press at Circuit House on Monday, April 18 he said that since here was a 21 per cent decrease in rainfall last year, the water level in dam has gone down.

“The water level stands at 9.6 feet in the Thumbay dam as compared to 12.7 feet last year and in AMR dam the level is 13.9 meters as compared to 17.8 meters. We will be supplying drinking water on alternate days. We need the co-operation of the public,” he said.

Rai also requested the public not to use water from river basin for agriculture. He also urged the builders not use drinking water supplied by MCC for construction activities.  

MLA J R Lobo said that the MCC officials must clean the barren open wells and use that water to provide drinking water to the neighboring areas.

Mayor Harinath informed that drinking water will not be supplied to construction sites from April 20. Defective pipes will be repaired immediately, he said.

“The available water is enough for 12 days. With supply on alternate days, it will last for 20 days,” he added.

Deputy Commissioner, A B Ibrahim said that the public and officials have to be prepared for the situation.

Sports minister Abhaychandra Jain, MLA Mohiuddin Bava, SP Dr Sharanappa, city police commissioner Chandra Sekhar were present.
