Bengaluru: Chief Minister Siddaramaiah said on Wednesday the government would take a decision on the release of Cauvery water to Tamil Nadu after attending the meeting convened by Union Water Resources Minister Uma Bharati in New Delhi on Thursday.
Speaking with media persons, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah said the Supreme Court’s order on Tuesday was in two parts. “One part of the order is advising the Union Government to convene the meeting for the Chief Ministers of Karnataka and Tamil Nadu to sort out the dispute over sharing of Cauvery water. The other part is directing Karnataka to release 6,000 cusecs of Cauvery water per day for three days. I am leaving for Delhi to attend the meeting convened by Union Water Resources Minister Uma Bharti. The meeting will be held at 11.30 am on Thursday. Let us wait and watch for the outcome of the meeting,’’ the chief minister said.
He said the all-party meeting convened in the morning had advised the state government to adhere to the resolution passed by the both Houses – Assembly and Council. “The resolution was to utilize the water at four reservoirs for drinking purpose only. I will explain to Union Minister for Water Resources and Tamil Nadu counterpart about the resolution passed by the both Houses and the difficulties in implementing Supreme Court’s recent order to release 6,000 cusecs of Cauvery water per day for three days. We will decided whether to convene an all-party meet or convene special session of the legislature to discuss the release of Cauvery water to Tamil Nadu,’’ he said.
Earlier, in the day all-party meeting, convened by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, asked the state government to adhere to the resolution passed by the state legislature on the Supreme Court’s directive to release Cauvery water to Tamil Nadu.
Speaking with media persons, Minister for Law and Parliament Affairs T B Jayachandra said the leaders of all political parties gave their suggestions to the state government on the Supreme Court’s direction to Karnataka to release 6,000 cusecs of Cauvery water per day to Tamil Nadu for three days. “All of them wanted the state government not to release Cauvery water to Tamil Nadu. They have expressed their views on the issue. The Cabinet will take a decision on this issue. The Cabinet is expected to meet at 2 pm today,’’ Minister Jayachandra said.
According to Jagadish Shettar, Leader of Opposition in the State Assembly, the state government should respect the resolution passed by the both houses – Assembly and Council – on Cauvery water issue. “We have told the chief minister not to release Cauvery water. We advised him to respect the resolution passed by the both the houses. We told him to take a decision after attending the meeting convened by Union Minister for Water Resources Uma Bharti,’’ Jagadish Shettar said.
He said the BJP would support the decision taken by the state government.
Expressing displeasure over the adverse judgment by the Supreme Court on Cauvery issue, Y S V Datta, JD(S) leader said the state government should not release Cauvery water to Tamil Nadu. “We have made our stand very clear on Cauvery issue. The chief minister told us that a decision would be taken in the Cabinet meeting. Let them take a decision but we are against releasing Cauvery water to Tamil Nadu,’’ Datta said.
He said the government should respect people’s sentiment while obeying the Supreme Court’s order.
