Bengaluru: A gang of three robbers ended up stabbing a 59-year-old head constable, in a bid to escape arrest on Friday.
The injured is Nagaraj, who is set to retire next year. He has sustained injuries on his thigh and hand and is undergoing treatment in a private hospital.
Nagaraj was on night patrolling along with constable Revanna Siddappa, when the duo noticed an auto rickshaw on pipeline road. On probing, the trio in the auto failed to give convincing answer, due to which Nagaraj got into the auto and directed the auto driver to take the auto to the police station.
On reaching Vinayak circle, Nagaraj noticed some youth standing on footpath. He stopped the auto and directed the youth to go back home. At this point, the trio stabbed Nagaraj, pushed him out of the auto and fled.
However, constable Revanna Siddappa who was following the auto, directed the bystanders on the footpath to rush Nagaraj to hospital and chased the auto.
At Vyalikaval, the auto with tampered registration number toppled and thus Revanna Sidappa managed to nab one out of the three robbers.
Investigations later revealed that the trio had found a smart phone with a power bank in the auto. They had allegedly stolen the phone from Shivaprakash, a Malleswaram resident who works for a private firm employee, a few minutes before they were caught.
K.S.R. Charan Reddy, Additional Commissioner of Police (west), said a special team has been formed to nab the duo who is on the run.
