Bengaluru: The reservations for the posts of president and vice-president of zilla and taluk panchayats are out.
Of the 30 ZPs, 15 posts of president have been reserved for General Category, six each for SCs and OBCs and three for STs. A total of 14 ZP president posts have been reserved for women in all the categories.
With this, the kin of prominent politicians, particularly from opposition parties like JD(S) patriarch H D Deve Gowda’s daughter-in-law and former minister H D Revanna’s wife Bhavani and opposition leader in the Council K S Eshwarappa’s son Kanthesh have missed the chance to take over the position of the Presidents of ZPs.
According to the notification issued by the Rural Development and Panchayat Raj Department, the Hassan zilla panchayat president post has been reserved for an SC candidate, thereby trampling chances of Bhavani. Many had expected that Bhavani may become the President of the ZP considering the fact that her husband Revanna and CM Siddaramaiah share a cordial relation.
Likewise, the president post of Shivamogga zilla panchayat has been reserved for general woman, blocking chances of Eshwarappa’s son K E Kanthesh and Speaker Kagodu Thimmappa’s brother Kagodu Shivanna, both belonging to Other Backward Classes.
The ZP, TP elections were held in two phases and the results were announced on February 23. The ruling Congress won 10 ZPs, BJP seven and JD(S) two. Remaining 11 ZPs have seen a fractured verdict, putting the JD(S) in a position to play kingmaker in most of these ZPs.
