Bengaluru: United Way of Bengaluru (UWBe), a Bengaluru-based non-government organization (NGO) that endeavors to bring citizen communities together in order to facilitate sustainable development, announced on Friday the successful rejuvenation of 16 lakes in the city.
A coffee table book was launched by IT, BT, and Tourism Minister Priyank Kharge to capture and commemorate the efforts of 5000 citizens and 30 partners who were instrumental in Bengaluru’s lake rejuvenation drive.
In addition, UWBe announced Nandi Habba, a cultural festival to be organised by the Karnataka Tourism Ministry in association with the Namma Nimma Cycle Foundation. Nandi Habba will be held in Nandi hills from September 1-3, 2017.
The lake rejuvenation initiative, which is known as ‘Wake the Lake’ campaign, is one of the key activities launched by UWBe in 2009. The initiative has met with tremendous success and the NGO has been able to revive lakes in Yalahanka, Kaikondrahalli, Uttarahalli, Halasuru, Chinnappanahalli, Sheelavanthakere, Munnekolala, Sowlkere, Kaudenahalli, Devasandra, Sheegehhalli, Rachenahalli, Mahadevapura, Kundalahalli, Kudlu Doddakere and Dasarahalli.
The revival of these dying lakes has led to the conservation of flora and fauna, as well as the improvement of water quality. The lakes featured in the coffee table book stand proof to the developmental changes that have been made possible because of active engagement of communities and government bodies.
Unveiling the coffee table book, Priyank Kharge said, “This campaign undertaken by United Way of Bengaluru has created a lasting impact amongst the community. By instilling the need to participate in the city’s development amongst citizens, UWBe has ensured that communities take responsibility in improving Bengaluru’s environment and making it truly remarkable tourist destination. This initiative has set an excellent benchmark for the rest of the country.”
Speaking on the occasion, Prashanth Prakash, chairperson, UWBe, said that it gives immense pleasure to see more more communities coming together to support their neighbourhood lakes. “We have received tremendous encouragement and support from the government, volunteers and local citizen groups. We are now motivated to improve the conditions of many more lakes in Bengaluru”, said Prashanth Prakash.
