Bangalore: Minister of State for Agriculture, C Krishna Byre Gowda highlighted various issues of the farmers at  the two-day national conference on Agri-biotechnology organised under the theme Biotechnology, a versatile tool for agriculture in the emerging context, on Tuesday December 10.

He said, “A majority of lawmakers who are keen on farmers welfare however  lack knowledge of the pros and cons of biotechnology and end up making decisions influenced by vested interests.”

“There is a great need for creating awareness on biotechnology. Since lawmakers are unaware of the advantages and disadvantages of biotechnology, they often arrive at wrong conclusions, under the influence of vested groups. People from a cross section of society such as farmers, industrialists, ministers, officials must come together in order to create a common platform for a discussion on biotechnology”, he added.

Elaborating it further the minister said that very few people know that 95 percent of the cotton is grown in India. He emphasized on creating awareness in this regard.
