Bengaluru: State BJP president B S Yeddyurappa has urged the state government not to release Cauvery water to Tamil Nadu no matter what the consequences are.
BBMP Mayor election: No tie-up with JD(S), says Yeddyurappa-1In a release, Yeddyurappa said the Cauvery Supervisory Committee, after its meetings in New Delhi on Monday, has directed Karnataka to release 3,000 cusecs of water on daily basis for 10 days. “The state government must say that is well-nigh impossible due to the existing circumstances and stick to this stance in the interest of people in general and farmers in particular,” the BJP state president said.

He said the people of Karnataka have been suffering because of shortage of water even for drinking purpose and hence the state must not release Cauvery water to Tamil Nadu. “Inability to release water due to existing circumstances must not be construed as willful disobedience. It simply means that it is beyond the state’s capacity to release Cauvery water to Tamil Nadu,” he said.

Expressing apprehension over the media reports that Karnataka has agreed to release water – quoting Union Water Resources Secretary – he said: “If in case the state government has agreed to release water, then it means great betrayal of the worst-kind. The BJP will intensify its struggle against the Congress government for its treachery.”

He has also extended BJP’s support to the on-going agitation in Mandya where scores of swamijis of various mutts have sat on dharna in protest against the release of Cauvery water.
