Bengaluru: Minister for Home Dr G Parameshwara said on Thursday the government would take stringent action against those involved in anti-social activities such as robbery and rape.

Participating in the debate in the Legislative Council at Suvarna Soudha in Belavagi, Dr Parameshwara said violence including robbery and murder would not bring fame to any government and the public should feel that state government has become apathetic. “The state government is determined to control such anti-social elements. Let it be RSS activists or Congress workers or any other organization, the police will not keep quiet if they involve in anti-social activities. Murder is a murder. No one should have any doubt on the government’s capability to control such anti-social elements,’’ the home minister said.

He said the state government has established the units of prevention of violence against women at six places in the city. The government has taken measures to install CCTV cameras at municipalities, city corporations, educational institutions, markets and densely populated areas. “The government will not keep quiet if anyone takes law into his hands. The police have detected murder cases in Bengaluru and Mysuru. The police have nabbed the accused based on the CCTV footage,’’ the home minister said.

He said the state government has taken all measures to prevent crime in the state. “In 2014, 1629 murders, 1665 rapes, 6829 violence cases were reported. In 2015, 1539 murders, 1495 rape cases, 6673 violence cases were reported. In this year, 1351 murders, 1362 rape cases and 5417 violence cases were reported. All the accused were arrested and remanded in judicial custody,’’ he said.

Meanwhile, Leader of Opposition K S Eshwarappa has said a 17-year-old girl was gang-raped for 45 days in Shivamogga. At this juncture, Congress member V S Ugrappa objected Eshwarappa for misleading the Council. “I personally visited Shivamogga. Eshwarappa should not mislead the Council,’’ Ugrappa said.

Ugrappa’s intervention made Eshwarappa angry. “Who are you to intervene? Whether Parameshwara is the minister or you are the minister?’’ Eshwarappa asked.

Intervening in the debate, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has said the crime would be a crime and criminals, whoever they are, would be punished. “I appeal all the members to strive hard to prevent crime in the state,’’ the chief minister said.

At this juncture, Eshwarappa blamed the state government for not taking measures to punish the culprits involved in violence against the activists of RSS and other Hindu organizations. He said the government has been hiding the information on the culprits and protecting them instead of safeguarding poor in the state. Later, he stated a walk out from the Council.
