Bangalore : In a significant move, the state government has decided to provide title deeds to inhabitants of forests, excluding reserve forest in several parts of the state including Mangalore, Udupi, Uttara Kannada, Chikmagalur, Shimoga, Mysore, Kodagu, Chamrajnagar, Mysore, Kodagu and Belgaum districts.
The government has taken this decision on the basis of recommendations made by a Cabinet Sub-Committee formed in this regard. The decision will benefit around two lakh families. However, in order to avail the benefit, the Gram Sabhas should first identify the forest inhabitants.
The Department of Social Welfare will act as a mediatory and the title deeds would be issued with the co-operation of the Departments of Forest and Revenue.
