Bangalore:Under attack from the opposition for failing to respond effectively to the foot and mouth disease(FMD) which has spread in the state, the state Cabinet has decided to award compensation of Rs 25,000 for each head of cattle which has succumbed to the disease.

Addressing reporters after the Cabinet meeting, law and parliamentary affairs minister T.B. Jayachandra said the compensation would be paid after obtaining exact details of the number of dead cattle. For each dead calf, the government is considering paying compensation of Rs 10,000-15,000.

The Cabinet decision comes even as the JD(S) prepares to launch a padayatra from Srirangapatna to Bangalore on the issue. Jayachandra clarified that cattle insured by Karnataka Milk Federation will not get compensation.

Following complaints on the misuse of the Anna Bhagya scheme, the government has decided to appoint vigilance committee to oversee the subsidized rice scheme. These committees will oversee distribution of rice through the public distribution system PDS.

The presidents and vice presidents of gram panchayats, taluk panchayats, zilla panchayats, town municipal corporations and city municipal corporations will head the panel.
