A group of environmental enthusiasts in Bengaluru, known as Bengaluru Hudugaru, has initiated the ‘Cool Tree Campaign’ aimed at safeguarding trees in the IT hub of India.

The group highlights that rising temperatures and depleting groundwater levels have adversely affected numerous trees, leading to issues such as termite infestations and inhibited growth.

Every Sunday, a dedicated team of 20-30 individuals conducts drives to apply a protective white coating to these trees. This coating is concocted from a blend of chemicals including Befenthrin, Malathion or Organophosphate, neem oil, white powder, and wheat flour, ensuring adhesion. The formulation of this solution has been guided by suggestions from a BBMP forest range officer.

Vinod Kartavya, the founder of Bengaluru Hudugaru, emphasizes the detrimental effects of excessive heat preventing water from reaching tree branches, coupled with termite infestations exacerbating the situation by consuming available moisture, leading to accelerated decay and reduced lifespan of trees.

Kartavya explains, “However, by eliminating termites and applying the protective white coat, we can significantly enhance the health and longevity of trees. Just as humans require sunscreen to shield their skin from sun damage, trees need protection too.”

The campaign, ongoing for the past four weeks, has already treated over 200 trees with the white mixture post-termite removal.

Currently covering residential areas in Yelahanka, Indiranagar, Nagarabhavi, and Shanthala Nagar, the group plans to extend the initiative to more areas in the city.
