In a tragic incident, five youngsters lost their lives in a drowning accident at Sangama in Kanakapura taluk, Ramanagara district, Bengaluru. The incident occurred on Monday while the group was on a trip with friends.
Police have identified the deceased as Varsha (20), Neha (19), Harshitha (20), Tejas (21), and Abhishek (20), the latter hailing from Bihar while the rest were from various parts of Bengaluru. Varsha, Neha, Harshitha, and Tejas were students at colleges located in Rajajinagar, Rajarajeshwari Nagar, Chikkabanavara, and Vijayanagar, respectively. Abhishek had recently completed his pre-university education.
According to police investigators, the group of 12 arrived at the confluence of Arkavathi and Kaveri on two-wheelers around noon. None of them were proficient swimmers. Ignoring warnings from the Forest Department, all 12 entered the waters. While seven managed to stay safe, the five victims, unaware of the water’s depth, tragically drowned. Their bodies have since been recovered.
All 12 individuals were acquainted through their studies at a Pre-University College (PUC). The authorities have informed the parents of the deceased, and the jurisdictional Sathanur police have initiated further procedures. Following the completion of autopsies at a hospital in Harohalli, the bodies were handed over to the respective families.
