Bangalore: Anna Bhagya, most ambitious programme of state government was introduced simultaneously at all the districts on Wednesday July 10, which would benefit 99 lac BPL families.

As the union government is making every arrangement to introduce Food Safety Bill, the state government has introduced Anna Bhagya programme similar to the Bill.  Accordingly, a member of BPL will get 10 kilograms of rice at Re 1, two members of a family will get 20 kilograms of rice and above 2 members of families will get 30 kilograms of rice.

The state government has procured 25 metric tons of rice from Chattisgarh at the rate of Rs 27 per kilograms toward Anna Bhagya programme to distribute rice at the rate of Rs 1 per kilograms. The state has in stores 84 lac tons of rice that was sourced during April and May, which would suffice to distribute rice to BPL families during July.

The state government has plans to buy rice through online trading besides the stocks that it will get from union government.  It needs 2.84 lac metric tons of rice every year to continue the programme.

UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi has called a meeting of Chief Ministers of Congress-ruled states across the nation and presidents of state Pradesh Congress Committees on July 13, related to introduce this programme, while CM Siddaramaiah will be flaked on the occasion.

It is significant that such a large scale programme was introduced for the first time by Karnataka, in spite the distribution of rice prevails in Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu.

The state will not face the shortage of rice, as it is indigenously available.  Its sourced from other states because it costs less, said CM Siddaramaiah.

Dakshina Kannada (DK) district gets white rice:

It is significant that DK district gets white rice along with boiled rice under the first stage of programme.  Food Corporation of India (FCI) has the stocks of 2,400 tons of white rice in its stores.  It will be distributed first and followed by white rice from coming month.

CM Siddaramaiah clarified that there is no politics in introducing the programme, as its introduced based on the announcement in the election manifesto to distribute rice at the rate of Rs 1 per kilograms to BPL families.

CM Siddaramaiah offered the motion to introduce the programme here on Wednesday July 10 at 11.00am.

The state food and civil supplies minister Dinesh Gundu Rao presided the programme.
