Kolkata: As many leaders are raising their concern regarding delay in releasing final figures of voting by the Election Commission, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee also voiced concerns regarding discrepancies in the voting figures released by the Election Commission on Tuesday evening, four days following the Phase 2 polls.
Banerjee pointed out that in areas where her Trinamool Congress is expected to outperform the BJP, there has been a sudden increase in the voter turnout data and she questioned how that is possible?
She stated that the Election Commission had issued a notice after a significant surge in voter turnout was reported in areas where the BJP was expected to receive fewer votes.
Banerjee questioned the sudden rise in voting figures, particularly emphasizing that approximately 19 lakh voting machines have been missing for an extended period. She urged the Election Commission to dispel any doubts among the public and emphasized the importance of maintaining impartiality, stating, “There is no point in becoming the BJP Commission. The people of India want to see you work as an independent Election Commission.”
The Election Commission, which typically releases final polling figures on the polling day or the following morning, provided revised figures on the evening following the polling day. The final voter turnout for Phase One in Bengal was reported as 81.91 percent, and for Phase Two, it stood at 76.58 percent. These figures represent an increase from the initial figures reported on the polling day.
In West Bengal will vote in all seven phases, several constituencies in North Bengal went to polls in Phase 1, followed by Balurghat, Raiganj, and Darjeeling in Phase 2. Many of these constituencies are currently held by the BJP, which aims to boost its representation in the state from 18 to 25 out of 42 constituencies.
