Mumbai Police are furious over the demise of an accused person in the case involving gunfire outside Salman Khan’s residence while they were in custody. The Crime Investigation Department, or CID, is looking into Anuj Thapan’s death, senior officers have told the media.
Punjabi resident Thapan is accused of providing weapons to the gunmen who opened fire on April 14 outside the actor’s Bandra residence. He was taken into custody a week ago and placed in the crime branch’s lock-up, which is close to the Mumbai Police headquarters.
According to police, Thapan and five others were in the lock-up last morning. Around 11 am, he went to the toilet. When he did not come out for a long time, cops forced open the door and found him hanging by a bedsheet, police have said. He was rushed to a hospital, where he died during treatment.
The CID will investigate whether any police officers stationed close to the lock-up were negligent. An accidental death case has been reported. Five officers were on duty close to the lock-up, according to a senior police officer, and CCTV cameras were also installed. “After examining the CCTV footage, we will find out what exactly happened,” he stated. Today, JJ Hospital will perform the autopsy.
According to other prisoners in the lockup, Thapan was fearful about the case and that he might not be granted bail, according to law enforcement sources.
Officials of the Mumbai Police crime branch arrested Thapan and Sonu Kumar Bishnoi from Punjab’s Fazilka on April 26. They had allegedly supplied weapons to Sagar Pal and Vicky Gupta, who are accused of firing at Salman Khan’s residence.
Thapan’s family has alleged that he was murdered in prison. His brother Abhishek told news agency ANI, “We received a call today and were told that Anuj has died by suicide. He was not the kind to die by suicide. He has been murdered. We want justice”.
His attorneys have requested an investigation and claimed foul play. “Earlier, all four of the accused had expressed their fears for their safety to the court. Two days later, one of them is dead. This raises serious concerns about how the police operate.
Gangster Lawrence Bishnoi and his brother Anmol Bishnoi are among the accused in the firing case. The firing outside Salman Khan’s house was earlier attributed to Anmol Bishnoi. The police have filed charges against the accused under the severe Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act and the Indian Penal Code.
