In Kannauj, Uttar Pradesh, a school converted a classroom into a swimming pool so that pupils could cool off in the sweltering heat. There, the mercury rose to forty degrees Celsius.
In response to a heatwave that broke records for temperatures and made many kids stay at home, the action was taken.
In the videos, several students from a primary school in the Mahsaunapur village can be seen having fun in the classroom’s artificial swimming pool, which looked like a two-foot water tank.
“The mercury level has been between 38 to 40 degrees Celsius for the past few. This has reduced the number of children in the school drastically,” the school’s principal Vaibhav Rajput said.
“But after a classroom of the school was filled with water, children started coming. They are now studying and are also getting relief from the heat by swimming,” Mr Rajput, who is known for his interesting ideas in the village, said.
Intense Heat Across India
Major portions of India have been suffering from intense heatwaves, with Monday’s high reaching 45 degrees Celsius.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) said on Monday that extremely hot weather is predicted for the south peninsula region over the next five days and for east India until May 1.
In addition, the weather service issued a red color warning, stating that over the next two to three days, intense heat could scorch portions of Andhra Pradesh, Bihar, West Bengal, and Odisha. There is currently an orange color alert in effect for a portion of Sikkim, Karnataka, and Telangana.
Individuals in regions where a red alert has been issued are advised to exercise extreme caution as they may become ill from heat exhaustion or heatstroke. People who work hard or are exposed to the sun for extended periods of time are more likely to get heat illness in orange-colored warning areas.
The seven-phase Lok Sabha elections, which started on April 19 and will run through June 1, are happening at the same time as the rising temperatures.
