Lima: According to local authorities on Monday, a tragic incident occurred in northern Peru resulting in the loss of at least 25 lives and leaving over a dozen individuals injured. Olga Bobadilla, a local official, informed RPP radio that the event took place late Sunday along a rugged dirt road in Cajamarca’s Andean region.

The bus, carrying over 50 passengers, veered off the road, plummeting some 200 meters into a ravine. Jaime Herrera, another municipal official, reported that the bus came to rest perilously close to a river, leading to some passengers being swept away by its currents.

Emergency services, including rescue teams and firefighters, swiftly responded to the scene, evacuating the injured to nearby hospitals. The toll of casualties was revised from an initial count of 23 to 25 throughout the day. Meanwhile, the municipality of Celendin declared a 48-hour period of mourning as distraught individuals, many in tears, congregated at a local police station, anxiously awaiting updates on their loved ones.

Tragically, such accidents are not uncommon on Peruvian roads, attributed to factors like speeding, inadequate road conditions, insufficient signage, and lax enforcement of traffic regulations. Last year alone, the nation recorded over 3,100 fatalities from traffic-related incidents. Authorities have initiated an investigation into the roadworthiness of the bus involved in this devastating crash.
