Madhya Pradesh: In yet another incident of cow vigilantism, a gang beat up two women black and blue while the cops and the public turned mute spectators here at a railway station in Madhya Pradesh on Tuesday.
The video shot by one of the spectators of a few cow protectors assaulting women is doing rounds where the women were slapped, kicked and abused at Mandsaur, around 350 km from state capital Bhopal. The policemen are seen making half-hearted attempts to control the crowd.
According to reports, the police were at the railway station to arrest the two Muslim women; they said that they had been tipped off about the women travelling with a large quantity of beef to sell. Even after the police caught them, the women were assaulted by a crowd that had gathered at the railway station.
In the video, the women were cornered by a crowd that is heard screaming “Gau Mata Ki Jai (Hail holy cow)”. They were slapped and punched by the women in the mob until one of them collapses. The policemen also apparently did not try hard enough to protect the women from the blows. The women were thrashed for nearly half an hour before the police led them away.
The police recovered the meat from the women and the meat samples were examined by a local doctor who pronounced it to be buffalo meat, not beef. The women have still been charged, because they did not have a permit to sell meat. But the police have not taken any action against the cow protectors who took law into their hands.
State home minister Bhupendra Singh today said: “No can take law in their own hands. A probe will be conducted.”
It may be recalled that some time ago, several Dalit men were flogged, tied to an SUV and paraded for skinning a dead cow in Una in Gujarat earlier this month and the video of the same went viral creating national outrage.
