In a tragic incident, a 26-year-old woman lost her life while commuting to her office by a local train between Dombivli and Kopar railway stations during the morning peak hour on Monday. This marks the second such death within five days on this stretch.
The deceased, identified as Riya Rajgor, fell off the overcrowded train while traveling on the footboard, as she couldn’t find space inside the compartment between 8:30 am to 9 am. A resident of Dombivli (east), Rajgor lived with her parents and a brother and worked for a construction company in Thane.
This incident comes shortly after the death of a 25-year-old postgraduate student from IIT, Avdhesh Dubey, who met with a similar fate while traveling on a local train from Dombivli to Thane last Thursday.
Upon witnessing the woman’s fall, fellow train commuters promptly alerted railway authorities, who rushed her to Shastri Nagar Hospital. Unfortunately, she was declared ‘brought dead’ by medical personnel, stated senior railway police inspector Kiran Undre.
Expressing concern, Rajesh Jagtap, a regular commuter from Kalyan, called for an increase in the number of train services from Dombivli. Other commuters emphasized the urgency for MMRDA to expedite work on the Kalyan-Bhiwandi-Thane metro project, which has been progressing at a sluggish pace for many years.
