Eastern and southern peninsular India are currently experiencing a severe heatwave, but it will soon pass. The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a forecast that suggests the southern states might have to wait another day, while the eastern region might receive relief by today.
Up until May 10, the weather office predicted a period of precipitation over these areas that would be accompanied by thunderstorms and strong winds.

Since last month, there has been a severe heatwave that has caused daily highs of over 40 degrees in these two regions. Kolkata saw its highest temperature in fifty years on the final day of April, with a reading of 43 degrees.

As the East and the South gets a relief, a fresh heatwave spell is likely to sweep over western India, covering Gujarat, Rajasthan and western Madhya Pradesh during the next five days.

In the Northeast, rainfall and thunderstorms are likely to continue till tomorrow.

The Khasi-Jaintia Hills region in Meghalaya has been receiving heavy rains since yesterday. Several houses were damaged and over 400 people were affected by the rains. It will continue for another 48 hours, the IMD said.
