Bhubaneswar: Foreign Minister S Jaishankar mentioned that India is awaiting information from Canadian authorities concerning the recent arrest of three Indian individuals charged with the murder of Hardeep Singh Nijjar, a Khalistani terrorist. The Canadian police have initiated an investigation into potential connections between the suspects and the Indian government. Mr. Jaishankar emphasized the need to wait for official details from the police regarding the suspects’ backgrounds.
Regarding concerns about organized crime from Punjab operating in Canada, Mr. Jaishankar reiterated India’s previous communication with Canadian authorities.
India’s High Commissioner to Canada, Sanjay Verma, expressed the hope for regular updates from Canadian authorities on the matter. He noted that the arrests stemmed from investigations conducted by Canadian law enforcement and stated that India has no official comment on the issue as it is considered internal to Canada.
The three arrested individuals, all Indian nationals, were apprehended in Edmonton, Alberta. Hardeep Singh Nijjar, aged 45, was fatally shot outside a gurdwara in Surrey, a suburb of Vancouver with a significant Sikh population. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau previously alleged Indian government involvement in the case, leading to tensions with New Delhi.
