Police presence intensified on university campuses across the United States on Wednesday following the dispersal of prolonged protests related to Israel’s conflict with Hamas.

The University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) witnessed a significant number of police vehicles patrolling the campus after confrontations occurred overnight between counter-protesters and pro-Palestinian students.

Similarly, at Columbia University in New York City, where protests have been concentrated, police remained on standby after intervening late Tuesday to disband demonstrations on campus.

The deployment of heavily equipped police officers at these esteemed institutions raised concerns among some students.

Mark Torre, a 22-year-old UCLA student, expressed mixed feelings, stating, “While I believe a strong police presence is necessary for campus safety, I’m also concerned about its implications.”

Reports emerged from Columbia University and the City University of New York (CUNY) of students alleging rough treatment and aggressive tactics by law enforcement during the dispersal of protests.

One CUNY student, identified only as Jose, recounted his experience, stating, “I was subjected to brutality during the arrests, enduring injuries and a prolonged detention.”

Medical personnel attending to released detainees reported treating various injuries, including severe head trauma and concussions.

According to Police Commissioner Edward Caban, approximately 300 arrests were made at Columbia and CUNY.

Mayor Eric Adams attributed the tensions to “outside agitators,” a claim disputed by students at Columbia.

Minouche Shafik, the president of Columbia University, expressed regret over the events, acknowledging the deep sadness they evoked.

The protests, which have spread to around 30 US universities, primarily revolve around the escalating casualties in Israel’s conflict with Hamas in Gaza.

The demonstrations present a challenge for university administrations striving to balance free speech rights with concerns over criminal activities and hate speech.

The Biden administration emphasized the importance of peaceful protests within the bounds of the law, acknowledging the rights of dissenting voices.

Former President Donald Trump voiced support for the police response at Columbia, urging university presidents to dismantle encampments and restore normalcy to campuses.

Incidents of police intervention and clashes with protesters were reported at various universities, including Fordham University, the University of Wisconsin at Madison, the University of Texas in Dallas, and the University of Arizona.

The ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas, which began with a militant attack in October, has resulted in significant casualties on both sides, with civilians bearing the brunt of the violence.
