New York: An Indian diplomat Devyani Khobragade was arrested and handcuffed for submitting fraudulent documents in support of a visa application for an Indian national, on Thursday December 12.
She has been accused of furnishing false information in the visa application for an Indian national who worked for her and is also facing charges of exploiting the latter by offering poor wages.
The 39-year-old Khobragade who is the Deputy Consul General at the Indian Consulate in New York, is the in-charge of Political, Economic, Commercial and Women’s Affairs at the consulate.
Khobragade, was reportedly arrested on the street while she was dropping her daughter to school. She was later released on a $250,000 bail. The charges against her carry maximum sentences of ten years and five years in prison.
The federal prosecutor Preet Bharara has informed stating that, the sham dealt by Khobragade had made a woman work as a babysitter and housekeeper at her home in New York from November to June this year. The prosecutor further said that the woman had been exploited and made to work for an unfairly less wages.
