According to reports, the NYPD’s emergency service unit (ESU) received a distress call around 3:30 p.m. local time alerting them to a woman in apparent danger of jumping from the building’s ledge.
Upon arrival, officers found themselves separated from the woman by a glass barrier, necessitating the use of a rope to access her on the 54th floor.
The video depicts two officers gripping the woman’s left arm through a narrow opening before a third officer, tethered to a rope, leaps over the glass partition to join his colleague. Together, they awaited assistance from fellow officers positioned on the opposite side to secure the woman. Amidst the rescue, one officer is heard reassuring the woman with the words, “You’re okay.”
In a statement shared on the NYPD’s official platform, it was emphasized, “When the public needs help, they call the police. When the police need help, they call ESU.”
The courageous rescue effort garnered widespread acclaim from social media users, with one commenter expressing awe at the officers’ bravery, stating, “Holy smokes, y’all, I ran towards some crazy stuff, but never, never the edge of a building! Amazing work y’all, great work.” Another user remarked on the harrowing nature of the situation, commenting, “Wow, that’s scary to see when they were rescuing that poor woman when she’s scared. That’s really terrifying to see.”
Reports from the New York Post indicate that following the rescue, the woman was transported to Bellevue Hospital for further evaluation and care.
