The US Secret Service reported that a driver lost his life after slamming his vehicle into the White House’s outer gate late on Saturday.
A statement on social media platform X stated that “no threat” existed to the White House itself. “Shortly before 10:30pm a vehicle traveling at a high speed collided with an outer perimeter gate on the White House complex,” the service said.
According to the statement, responding officers “attempted to render aid to the driver who was discovered dead.”
The Secret Service, along with the police and fire departments of the District of Columbia, have launched an investigation into the fatal crash, according to Secret Service spokesman Anthony Guglielmi.
“No threat or public safety implications” was what he added.
Authorities arrested a second person in January after their car collided with the complex’s outer gate.
Following several high-profile trespassing incidents at the White House in recent years, a stronger, higher metal fence will be built around the famous mansion’s perimeter in 2020.
