New Delhi: After a video of a man torturing a dog in Delhi began doing the rounds on social media, animal activists wrote to the Delhi police commissioner to shame the accused and take action against him.

The man, was arrested on Monday from Vivek Vihar in east Delhi.

The video, posted by the accused himself on Facebook, captures him initially cuddling a stray dog and later, torturing it by whirling it around holding one of its legs and throwing it mercilessly at a parked car.

After coming across the video on Facebook, lawyer and columnist Shehzad Poonawalla began an online campaign to shame the man. The campaign was aided by the NGO Policy Samvad.

Soon after the incident took place, Policy Samvad traced him down through his Facebook profile and posted this screenshot of the man, whose Facebook moniker was Dar Ji (Dj). The profile was deleted soon after.

Police say the youth was identified as Rahul Kumar, 21, a resident of Janta Colony.

He was booked under IPC Section 429 (mischief by killing or maiming cattle) and Section 11 of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animal Act.
