Indian Railways has recently faced increased scrutiny, with concerns ranging from substandard food quality to issues with ticketless passengers. A viral video has added to the criticism, showing a member of the Railways housekeeping team disposing of waste from a moving train, prompting questions about accountability and hygiene practices.
In the video, a railway housekeeping staff member is seen throwing a garbage bag full of trash from a moving train onto the tracks. The staff member also uses a floor wiper to clear garbage from the train’s floor, but unfortunately, the waste is discarded without proper disposal procedures. This has raised concerns about the adherence to standard operating procedures (SOPs) and hygiene practices within the Railways.
According to the accompanying caption, a passenger who witnessed this behavior filed a complaint through the railway helpline (139). In response, the staff began searching for the complainant to discuss the challenges they face, such as inadequate bags for trash collection. The caption mentioned, “A passenger lodged a complaint on 139 & in no time the supervisor & entire gang turned trying to find who has complained & why? Saying they aren’t paid properly, not provided enough bags to collect trash & so they are managing with meagre resources.”
The video quickly went viral, eliciting various reactions from internet users. One user expressed relief that such behavior is not observed in the national carrier Air India. Another expressed disbelief and questioned how railway staff could operate in such a manner. A third user highlighted the responsibility of passengers in maintaining cleanliness within the train compartments.
Acknowledging the issue, the Mumbai division of Railways responded on social media, stating, “Please share the PNR and train numbers so we can act against the staff.” This response indicates a willingness to address the matter and take appropriate action against the involved staff members.
This seems to be the normal practice of the On Board Housekeeping Staff inside #IndianRailways trains.
Just dump the all the collected trash on the tracks from the moving train.
