Ranchi: In an unexpected turn of events, three-time Jharkhand MLA Sarfaraz Ahmad resigned from the state assembly, just hours after ignoring a seventh summons from the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in the Ranchi land scam case. Speculation arose that his resignation was a strategic move, prompting the BJP to predict that Chief Minister Hemant Soren would step down, allowing Ahmad’s wife, Kalpana Soren, to assume the chief ministership through the vacant Gandey seat.
Ahmad, 64, resigned from his assembly membership without providing a reason, leading to heightened speculation. Speaker Rabindranath Mahto, while accepting the resignation, remarked on Ahmad’s seniority and chose not to seek an explanation for the unexpected decision. The assembly secretariat officially announced the vacation of the Gandey seat, effective December 31.
Despite attempts to contact Ahmad for clarification, he remained unresponsive to calls and messages. BJP’s Godda MP Nishikant Dubey fueled the speculation by suggesting that Ahmad’s resignation was a precursor to a change in leadership. Dubey posted on social media, stating that when Chief Minister Hemant Soren resigns, Kalpana Soren is expected to become the next CM, adding a forecast of a challenging new year for the Soren family.
However, it was noted that Kalpana may be ineligible to contest a reserved seat. Independent MLA Saryu Roy expressed agreement with the speculation, indicating that if a change in government occurs in Jharkhand, the Gandey seat might remain vacant for a new entrant, and the current occupant could potentially move to the Rajya Sabha.
Hemant Soren, facing a 48-hour deadline until Sunday to respond to the ED summons issued on December.
