Mumbai: Cricket Legend Sunil Gavaskar has taken a strong stance against Virat Kohli’s recent comments criticizing commentators for questioning his strike rate in the ongoing IPL tournament.
Last week, after leading RCB to a convincing win, Kohli took a dig at commentators for analyzing his strike rate compared to other openers.
Gavaskar, however, countered Kohli’s remarks, questioning why players respond to “outside noise” if they claim not to be bothered by it. He pointed out that commentators simply analyze what they see on the field and don’t have personal agendas.
Gavaskar further emphasized that a strike rate of 118, especially for an opener who gets dismissed in the mid-innings, doesn’t warrant applause. He implied that such a strike rate could hinder team strategy.
The batting legend also expressed disappointment with the broadcaster, Star Sports, for repeatedly airing the clip of Kohli’s criticism directed at “their own commentators.” He believes this constant highlighting undermines the commentators’ role.
This exchange adds fuel to the ongoing debate about strike rate expectations in T20 cricket. With both Kohli and Gavaskar holding strong opinions, it will be interesting to see how this situation unfolds.
