Kushalnagar: There are attractive water locales in Kodagu which include Abbey falls in Madikeri Taluk, Mallalli falls near Somwarpet and Irpu falls in Virajpet Taluk. In addition there is Harangi dam (now not open for tourists) which is likely to be converted into a tourist location when the ongoing beautifying works are completed.

The one place which tourists hardly know and visit is Chiklihole minor dam project site which is on the way to Siddapur from Kushalnagar. The dam site is surrounded by greenery, coffee plantations and a walk along the site is really refreshing for all nature lovers.

It’s amazing is to view the water overflowing in semicircular lotus or in the form of a half moon when the dam is filled to the brim. The excess water is used to support agricultural activities which cover 800 hectares in Kushalnagar Hobli and Periyapatna Taluk. The small crest gates remain closed to maintain maximum water level during other periods.

There are resorts on the other side and sometimes one can witness wild elephants involved in water sport and drinking water in the backwaters. It’s advisable to visit this amazing dam site only during the monsoon. The tourists can also visit places like Dubare elephant training camp which is quite near from this dam site. It’s better to travel in private vehicles or hired vehicles as no public transport is available to reach the site which is 3 kms off the main road.

If government spends little money in maintaining (to begin with a small garden, lawns and lighting) and developing this dam site, it may enter the State tourism map sooner than later. At the same time, it should not allow any construction activity in the vicinity and ensure cleanliness around the area.

The serene atmosphere in the midst of nature and the still-waters around, provide the ‘comfort’ one seeks in today’s world.
