“Music is life – be it devotional, classical or any other form – music can release all your senses and make you tension free”, says Gopi Kamath, an ace musician from Dubai, whose is originally from Karnataka. Kamath is a singer and a music composer in various languages including Hindi, Kannada, Tulu, Konkani among others.
Gopi Kamath, is a well-known figure for Kannadigas in Dubai and various other parts of UAE. A former mechanical engineer, Kamath has lived most of his life in the Middle East, however close to his roots and music of course, Gopi claimed great height in his melodious expedition.
Gopi Kamath, who hails from Udupi, did his schooling from Christians High School and PUC from MGM College – both in Udupi. At the age of 17, when Gopi shifted to Mangalore to pursue his engineering at the Karnataka Polytechnic College, little did he know his hobby towards music will move to a new level. Gopi has no formal training, but was gifted as he heard and played various instruments. Within a year Gopi picked up the guitar and started playing for events and concerts.
In that era, Ashok Charan was one among the famous musicians of Karnataka – mainly Tulunadu, Gopi Kamath performed several times with his band (he was then a part of), in the shows held by Ashok Charan. Gopi gained immense appreciation and recognition for his talent, but was sent to Mumbai and then to Kuwait, in a scope to find a more fitting-and-formal job. Nevertheless, Gopi’s musical voyage never stopped, it followed him wherever he went. Gopi always took the initiative of gathering people and making good music. He also organized weekend musical events for friends and families.
The turning point in Gopi’s life was when he shifted to Dubai in the year 1979. Employed with the Dubai Electricity Company (now DEWA) and newly married, Gopi managed his new life and job – but never kept music as a secondary subject. Gopi met Wilfrey Pinto from Abu Dhabi – who had also played with him in his younger days in Mangalore as well as Kuwait. With collaboration and a few other well-wishers, Gopi started doing musical nights, corporate events, weddings, birthday parties with his group.
As his popularity grew in 2006, Gopi decided to go solo. He performed in 16 countries including Panama, Ghana, Angola, Kuwait, Oman, Dubai, India, Singapore, Thailand, Honk Kong, Indonesia and others. Gopi made music with renowned artists and classical singers like Kishori Amonkar, Beepsen Joshi, Gaganath Mangeshkar, Paraveen Sultana, Pardmashree Rashid Khan, Panjak Udas, Pandit Jashraj and others. Gopi, who had only two speakers and one mixer for his personal use, got an exorbitant series of sound equipment as his demand grew. Since then he has done several shows. Gopi who works under the banner name of FLASHBACK EVENTS does several musical nights.
Talking to NewsKarnataka about music, Kamath recollected a few old numbers – Mog Tujho Kitlo Ashelo (a 30-year-old Konkani song) and Moke Da Singaree(a 40-year-old Tulu song), he said, “Even when I sing a few lines of these songs, the audience gets so excited and starts singing along, these songs really are ever-green.”
When asked about the comparison between the old and the current numbers, Kamath cynically said, Baby Ko Base Pasand Hai – he added, “These songs don’t have shelf life. These are here today and tomorrow done, but the songs sung by Kishore Kumar, Hemanth Kumar, Yesudas, Mukesh and several others are still cherished and heartened by people”.
Gopi, who still lives in Dubai with his family sings and manages FLASHBACK EVENTS. Music lovers can expect a treat in the month of November as he plans for a show.
