Research Conference facilitates platform for emerging paradigms on Gender and Media on May 2016

Dubai: The School of Media & Communication will be hosting its second International Research Conference themed, “Media & Cultural Resistance: Beyond Gender Stereotyping” on 15th May 2016 at Manipal University, Dubai.
The conference organized under the aegis of Media and Communication Research & Analysis Wing (MCRAW), has invited students, academicians and industry professionals to share and discuss new concepts, progressive methodologies, embryonic approaches and innovative practices within the world of media and the wider social environment.

“This year’s edition will be focused on deconstructing gender represented in the media. It comes with no surprise that our world is transforming into a diverse global culture and media undoubtedly plays a significant role: culturally, socially, economically, politically and ideologically,” said Megna Kalvani, Assistant Professor in the School of Media & Communication and MCRAW conference coordinator.

“Besides creating a premier forum to present research and new advances in the fields of theoretical, experimental, and applied Media and Cultural studies. We have organized engaging pre event activities like art installations, film screenings and panel discussions related to understanding cultural identity, self- identity and gender allowing our students to embark on serious academic pursuit and encourage an overall research environment at par with any center of excellence” added Megna.

Industry and Academic oriented speakers will present significant findings covering topics addressing pertinent issues relevant to the dynamics of gender and media. This year’s keynote speaker Professor K. Hariharan, Dean at Mahindra École Centrale, Hyderabad is a renowned South Asian director with an extensive contribution in Indian filmography and cinema culture studies. He is tentatively titled to talk on, “Indian cinema: gender politics, cultural identity and questions of representation”.

Some of the industry academic speakers include Manju Ramanan, Group Editor, Film Fare Middle East, Femina Middle East, exploring the women in celebrity culture; Reshel Shah Kapoor, Independent film maker of award winning documentary titled ‘The Black Sheep’ as she talks about the nonconformist and media marginalization of  gender and Wailana Rafeeq, Media Analyst and blogger will highlight the representation of South Asian migrants in the media, among others.

The conference will also divide itself into core parallel sessions based on paper submissions, some include: Youth & the Internet, Broadcasting & Gender and Cross cultural influences and developments. Accepted papers will be published in their official conference book with a unique ISBN code. Attendee registrations are open to academics, industry leaders, young researchers and students starting from AED 35.
