Qatar: For 22-year-old Laura, Qatar turned out to be a country that she would never ever want to be associated with in future.

She has all the good reasons. Laura, a Dutch citizen who had come to Qatar on a holiday was on Monday handed a suspended sentence and fined $824 (£580) after she served three months of jail. She may even be deported soon to Netherlands.

Her crime was that she reported her own rape!

While Laura has been given imprisonment for reporting rape and also ‘having sex outside marriage’ (a crime according to Qatari penal code), her perpetrator walks away with 140 lashes for adultery and public drinking!

The woman was detained in mid march after she reported the rape to the Qatari police, but the issue came to light over the weekend when her family decided to go public, revealing her name and pictures over a social campaign for justice.

This is the sad tale of Laura, who was allegedly raped after being drugged in a pub in Doha.

Brian Lokollo, Laura’s attorney is quoted in the media stating how she had parted from her glass of drink only for a while to dance on to a happening number and how she fainted after a few sips of drink at CRystal Lounge at W doha Hotel.

She found herself in an apartment with torn clothes when she regained her consciousness. She was drugged and raped. Though the police registered her complaint and immediately nabbed the perpetrator, Laura too could not walk free.

Her crime was that she had reported her own rape and had sex outside marriage!

While most media do not identity the victim, in this case Laura’s mother and attorney came in open informing her first name and also putting out in public her pictures while launching a social media campaign for justice.

Laura, however has been released on Monday into the care of the Dutch Embassy, reports Associated Press.
