Mysuru: The alert Women and Child Welfare Department stopped a child marriage that would have been held in couple of days.

Based on the information, Women and Child Welfare Department officials led by Radha, Deputy Director, raised the house at Ashokapuram where the family members of a 16-year-old girl had already conducted her engagement. The family members had plans to conduct marriage in few days. The young girl was engaged to a 24-year-old boy from Kanakagiri.

Radha, Deputy Director, Women and Child Welfare Department said, “We came to know that a 16-year-old girl from Ashokapuram was getting married in few days. Immediately along with our staff members we dashed into the girl’s house. We were surprised as family members had already conducted girl’s engagement with the boy. We warned the family members about the consequences if they go ahead with child marriage. But the girl’s mother said that as she is poor she is unable to look after her four children including three daughters. She also mentioned that she feels insecured to leave her children and go to office. Hence she decided to get her eldest daughter married. “

“On Monday we will visit the boy’s house and also warn him if he goes ahead with the marriage,” she added.
