Chamarajanagara: A female wild tusker has been causing havoc on the farmlands of peasants in the neighbouring villages including Basavapura, Venkatayyana Chatra, Dollipura and Nanjagra that are located on the edge of forest in the taluk.

A herd of wild tuskers are ransacking the farmers’ crop in the neighbourhood of Hongalavady that comes at the limits of Suvarnavati village close to forest.  The herd also has damaged electricity transformer in Siddayyanapura village.

The female tusker collapsed on the ground when it came into contact with live electricity cables, while the other tuskers fled in fear damaging the farmers’ crop.  Forty-year-old Shivanna, a resident of Nanjagra village and fifty-year-old Rajamma, a native of Byadamoodlu village were injured in tusker’s attack and are admitted in a hospital.

The female tusker recovered from electric shock after a shortwhile, and was cited nearby a wine store in Venkatayyana Chatra village.  The villagers ran helter and skelter fearing elephantine attack.  Meanwhile, MAIMUL director H S Basavaraju informed the forest department officials.  In spite of foresters tried to repulse the tusker by firing 5 rounds in the air, the tusker did not retreated to forest, instead continued to cause havoc on farmlands.

The farmers urged the forest department to carry out survey of crop loss owing to elephantine attack and award them appropriate compensation.
