Mysore: The sugarcane growers staged protest in front of the office of Deputy Commissioner here, urging the district administration to liquidate Bannariamman Sugar Factory that has not paid the arrears of sugarcane growers.

Addressing the sugarcane growers Union state president Kuruboor Shantakumar said that the owners have not paid the arrears of 12 lac tons of sugarcane processed at their sugar factory.

The factories in other districts are paying Rs 3,000 for 1 ton of sugarcane, while the owners of Bannariamman Sugar Factory are paying only Rs 2,400, alleged Shantakumar.

Shantakumar urged the Deputy Commissioner to liquidate the said sugar factory, and clear the arrears by selling the sugar stocks. He also alleged that the government has been protecting the factory owners who are cheating the sugarcane growers, alleged Shantakumar.

Shantakumar further said that despite a memorandum has been presented to CM Siddaramaiah, its of no use. “We do not beg, we demand money for the cost for our hard labour.  If we do not get our dues, we will stage massive protest shortly,” agitated Shantakumar.

Speaking on the occasion, Deputy Commissioner Dr Rame Gowda said that the issue has been brought to the notice of state administration and offered assurances of convening a meeting with factory owners to clear their dues in 10 days.

The protesters demanded a fixed date in this regard.

Hundreds of sugarcane growers and members of Union present at the occasion.
