Mysuru: Artillery employed during Vijayadashami where many rounds are fired on the final day of Navarathri (Nine day) festival to signify victory over evil. The artillery guns were handed over to the police department by the deputy commissioner after offering puja to goddess Chamundeshwari.
On the day of procession (Vijayadashami day) soon after offering floral petals to the photograph of goddess Chamundeshwari in the palace premises 21 rounds will be fired which has been a tradition over the years. The entire operations are carried out by artillery experts from the police department.
In preparation for Dasara festival, DC of Mysuru D Randeep who is also the executive officer of the palace administration offered prayers to Goddess Chamundeshwari in front of the main entrance of the palace where eight traditional artillery guns are kept. Later the same were handed over by the district administration to the police department.
Accepting the artillery guns, city police commissioner B.Dayanad said, 28 police personnel will be insured for the first time during dasara festivities.
There were few incidents in the past where police personnel were injured while firing artillery and said insurance amount is not fixed yet.
In addition police personnel will be provided safety equipments to prevent injuries. They will be using safety gadgets during training too, he clarified.
