Poverty eradication can end child labour: KS Mudagal

Mysore : The problem of child labour is not restricted merely to India but is prevalent worldwide, said KS Mudagal, President of District Legal Services Authority and Principal District and Sessions Judge.

She was speaking after inaugurating World Anti-Child labour Day programmes  at the ZP Auditorium here on Thursday June 12 under the joint aegis of the Labour Department, District Legal Services Authority and  National Child Labour Project.

Mudagal further said  the name of India does not figure in the list of ten nations where this unwelcome practice was widespread. At the same time she said there has been no significant improvement in the child labour scenario even after the Child Labour Prevention Act was implemented in 2002 in India.

She further stated that the problem of child labour can end only when there is poverty eradication.

Deputy Commissioner S Palaiah presided over the function,. NR Vijay, Deputy Director of Department of Women and Child Welfare, SM Siddalingaswami, Deputy Director of Sericulture Department, DV Ravikuar, Deputy Director of Factories and Boiler Department  Srikantayya, former Mayor, Venkatesh, Assistant Labour Commissioner.  MR Pushpalatha, Project Director of National Child Labour Project   and others were present.

Former child labourers who were enrolled in schools and excelled in tenth standard exams were honoured by gifting them bags.
