Mysore(TOI): The Karnataka State Open University is revising its syllabus for the various courses to ensure that its student community keeps in sync with the latest in what they study.
The premier institution which has highest concentration of student community among varsities in south India has initiated the process to revise the syllabus. At present, there are 4.5 lakh students enrolled for different fifty courses it is offering.
Syllabus for M Ed, B Ed, history, journalism and commerce are being revised, VC M G Krishnan said on Thursday. The aim is to update the syllabus to extend what is relevant to the student community, he told reporters. Syllabus for other courses will also be revised, he added.
This comes amidst digitalization of the syllabus and use of information and communication technologies (ICT) to help the students to study better. The varsity, which was set up 18 years back, is also planning to adopt mobile technology as an interface to reach the students cutting across various barriers. The revision is syllabus assumes significance given that the KSOU is planning to establish a finishing school to finetune their soft skills to make the market-ready. This is also to improve their employability which will take care of its brand value as it is facing competition from conventional varsities which are offering courses through distance education mode.
The varsity, which is preparing for admission season, has decided not to introduce any new courses this season but is moving into new building. When it was carved out of the University of Mysore in 1996, the KSOU was housed in a small two-storey building at one end of Manasa Gangotri, the PG campus of the University of Mysore. Now, it has its own sprawling campus which it has named as Muktha Gangotri where the eighteen years old varsity has created infrastructure required for its operation, thanks to the student community which has relieved it from depending on the governments for funding.
That explains how it can invest Rs 22.50 crore for the construction of administrative headquarters off Mysore-Madikeri road. The CM Siddaramaiah will be inaugurate the facility on Saturday. While the area has been robbed of its green sheen, the Muktha Gangotri has been developed as a one-centre stop for the students. The varsity has funded Rs 19.50 crore for Vigyana Bhavan wherein it has created infrastructure required for the science students.
