Mysuru: Mysuru city which hosted many national and international conferences especially in the month of December last year, is all set to start by conducting a national event in the very first month of the new year. The Department of Public Instruction, Government of Karnataka in association with School Games Federation of India will be conducting a five-day 62nd national inter school tennis tournament at Mysuru Tennis Club from January 17 to 21.
Budding and promising tennis players from across the country, both boys and girls, will be seen in action during the tennis competition. The participants in the age group of U-14 and U-17 from all over the country have excelled in their respective states. Over 620 players from 25 states will be testing their prowess in the event.
C Mariyappa, District Physical Education Officer said, “Though we have conducted a couple of national inter school competitions, this is for the first time we are conducting tennis competition of this level in Mysuru city. The preparations are on in full swing. We are coming out with five courts at Mysuru Tennis Club; some of the matches will also be played under floodlights. From each state for both U-14 and U-17 competition, five boys and equal number of girls will be competing separately under the two age categories in the event. From each state, including players, coaches and managers, 25 participants will be here. For smooth conduction of the event, we have formed seven different committees including reception, welcome, food, transport and disciplinary committee. Apart from this, to conduct the competitions, we have requested for 30 referees. We have requested Chief Minister Siddaramaiah to inaugurate the event and also trying to invite national tennis player Dhruthi Venugopal. The participants will be accommodated at Avila and CKC Convent.”
The winners will take home attractive trophies and certificates. The government has sanctioned Rs 12.5 Lakh for the event. The organisers are also looking for sponsors for the event.
