Mysuru: Mysuru Jayachamarajendra Zoo has several firsts to its credit, but this one is surely special. Noticing that young mothers face lot of embarrassment and inconvenience to breastfeed their little ones, the Mysuru Zoo authorities took a thoughtful step of opening baby care rooms here in the zoo.

There are a lot of women who come over to the zoo with their toddlers to show the animals and bring smiles on the faces of their little ones. Breastfeeding the little ones becomes necessary as touring the entire zoo takes more than two hours. Many women are seen hiding behind the trees and veils while feeding the babies.

Taking note of the same, former authorities of the Zoo- B P Ravi and Vijay Kumar had chalked out a plan to open at least three baby care rooms in the zoo. But, unfortunately they could not materialise the plan. But, when Venkatesh took charge as Chief Executive Officer of the Zoo, he instantly started working on the same and the result is that two of such baby care rooms have been constructed. The importance of the room can be realised when one sees mothers going to the room even before the rooms could be inaugurated.

The two rooms at the disposal of the moms have U-shaped granite seating, which can accommodate 10 women at a time. The walls of the rooms have pictures of mother and child and also have important messages on importance and benefits of breastfeeding. A message has been put up at the entrance of the zoo about the availability of the baby care room.
