Mysuru: With the nature of crime changing every minute, the police also have the need to keep themselves abreast with technologies that can help tackle and curb crime.
With this intention, the Mysuru Police Commissionerate has made wearing Body-worn cameras compulsory for its personnel along with having a walkie-talkie.
The traffic cops have been wearing the body cameras over the last 20-days, which helps them record the events around them. This comes as a blessing especially when there is a case for which the police need to table evidences.
The body worn cameras are extensively used by the police abroad, and now it has entered India.
The advantages of these cameras are, the cops can fine the violators on the spot or they can issue notice later. Drunken driving, driving without licence, not wearing seat belt/helmet etc can be handled efficiently. In the first phase, police commissioner B Dayanand has brought 25 cameras and five inspectors and 10 sub-inspectors along with 6 police stations are using it.
The cameras have the capacity to record incidents for 8 hours with good quality. A server of the same is connected to police commissioner’s office. Once in a week, the footage will be transferred to the server. These recorded footage are kept for 90 days. Important clips are saved while the rest would be deleted.
